BERWYN — Most coaches will say the evolution of offensive football is
an ongoing process, one that reaches maturation as the leaves change
color. Seldom do teams leave the “Dog Days” of summer behind to hit the
ground running.
Such was not the case for the Pioneers of
Conestoga High School as they downed a feisty Owen J. Roberts, 49-21, on
a humid night at Teamer Field. The two teams combined for 656 yards and
28 first downs in a rare opening-night shootout.
“You never know
how 15-, 16-, 17-year-old kids are going to react their first time in
this setting,” said Conestoga head coach John Vogan. “I’m very proud of
them. They came out and played very, very well. Did we make some
mistakes? Yeah, we did. But there’s nothing that happened tonight that
we can’t correct.”
