Perk Valley, Methacton shift focus to rivalry game

FAIRVIEW VILLAGE — Perkiomen Valley was oh so close to pulling out a season-opening win against Plymouth-Whitemarsh in front of its home crowd, while Methacton was just about down and out by halftime of its season-opener over in Souderton.
By the time the Vikings and Warriors stepped back on the practice field this week, all was forgotten.
What helped erase the frustration, disappointment and anger of last Friday night was knowing who was up next on their respective football calendars…
And that would be one another.
The Vikings and Warriors, who once had a very intense Thanksgiving Day series when they were part of the Suburban One Conference, renew the now Pioneer Athletic Conference rivalry Saturday (1 p.m.) at Methacton in the annual Battle Ax trophy game.
The survivor, of course, gets into the win column. Even more important, the survivor moves one step ahead of the other because both teams are expected to contend for a PAC-10 title this season.
That makes this game as pivotal a league-opener as there’s been in recent years.
