SIDE LINERS

SIDELINERS
A little bit of this and that ... perhaps local, maybe around the state or even throughout the country.

PAC Fact: The Pioneer Athletic Conference opens its 27th season this weekend with three games. The Boyertown at Upper Perkiomen game is the 55th overall between the two; Pope John Paul II is looking for its first win ever against Pottsgrove; and Methacton - which once dominated its series with Perkiomen Valley - is looking for its first league win over the visiting Vikings on Saturday afternoon.

Mismatch: Carson Long Institute, a District 3-Class A school from Bloomfield in Perry County, will be lining up against Delco Christian in both teams' season openers Saturday night at Marple-Newtown High School. You may have heard of Delco Christian, if only because the Knights have played their way into the district playoffs on occasion, including last year. ... Carson Long, on the other hand, hasn't won a football game since Sept. 20, 2008 - defeating Mt. Zion Christian of Maryland, 18-6. The Warriors have lost 33 consecutive games since and have been outscored (hold onto the keyboard), 1,585-133, or an average of 44 points a game in that stretch.Of the 48 games Carson Long has played over the last five years, it has been shut out in 29 of them. In other words, the Warriors haven't managed to get into the end zone in over 60 percent of those games. Carson Long's overall record the past 10 years is 7-94, going without a win in 2002, 2004-05, 2007, and 2009-11. ... In case you ask, Carson Long is the oldest boarding school in the nation that has military training. CLI was founded in 1836, when it opened the doors to six cadets.

Roman's Empire: You'd have to think that after what we wrote about in Tuesday's print edition about Lancaster Catholic senior Roman Clay and how he ran 22 times for 442 yards and six touchdowns in a 41-33 win over Dallastown last weekend. ... Clay's touchdown runs covered 1, 76, 62, 67, 33 and 76 yards - good enough for a school record. His 442 yards broke the Lancaster-Lebanon League single-game mark, which was 404 set by Cocalico's Tab Musser back in 1996. ... If that isn't enough, those yards were the fifth-most by any running back in Pennsylvania history - topped only by Mar's Austin Miele (448 in 2010); Germantown Academy's Reed Marko (453 in 2007); Connellsville's Marcus Furman (455 in 2000); and Harbor Creek's Steve Blose (490 in 2005).

Do you know who holds the area record for yards rushing in a game?
Send me an email at dseeley@pottsmerc.com - with the name, school and yards -
and if you're correct, a halftime dog and soda is on me.
